Sustainability with sustainability in mind
The sustainability of the project is evident in its construction and system. Pan Pacific Orchard has been built with an extensive rooftop solar or photovoltaic system that is complemented by a rainwater harvesting systems. This lets the hotel depend on irrigation methods to meet the landscape’s water requirements, resulting in the most efficient energy and water usage.
Water-efficient fittings will be also installed as part of the hotel’s efforts to save water.
In addition, the hotel is equipped with rain sensors that are connected to an efficient irrigation method that is water efficient that allows it to stop irrigation during times of heavy rainfall. This helps reduce the water usage of the hotel. Additionally, to help with these issues the hotel also boasts an internal system for recycling greywater. This is a term used to describe the treatment of wastewater from appliances like showers, bathtubs and sinks, so that the water can be recycled within the property for non-potable uses for example flushing toilets.
The hotel is also built using eco-friendly materials, mostly making use of products that are approved from The Singapore Green Building Council. These are recycled and low-energy like one-tick concrete two-tick toilet waterproofing the toilet’s partitions and mats for landscaping as well as precast wall panels.
To save energy the hotel has put in place energy-efficient systems and design. It is unique in its design and massing of buildings to maximize natural light and the airflow. The passive design eliminates the need for further heating or cooling in order to maintain the temperature at a comfortable level in the building, which reduces the energy usage. Furthermore the 38% of the common areas have efficient daylighting. This is due to the efficient installation of window and open spaces, that allow natural light to penetrate the property and reduces the need in artificial illumination.
It also has double-glazed glass windows that are low energy to minimize heat transfer within the building. It also uses efficient air distribution systems that are energy-efficient and LED lighting. The hotel’s lifts have energy-efficient equipment, while its roofs feature an installed solar power system to produce energy to power the hotel’s use. The hotel also features energy-efficient air-to-water heat pumps that produce hot water.
Pan Pacific Orchard has also implemented environmentally friendly waste management and heat recovery methods. Recycling bins are conveniently placed in the main lift lobby as well as in the car park’s the lift lobby, and in back-of-house areas that encourage recycling.
To dispose of leftover food, this hotel offers an eco-digester system that can recycle food waste using by-products from organic compost and greywater.
The compost will be returned to the eco-digester system in order to achieve self-sufficiency. Every guest room has been fitted with water dispensers in order to cut down the use of glass bottles for drinking water. Additionally, the hotspots that are located on the exterior of the hotel are equipped with dry misting fans to provide additional cooling. The lobby and pre-function areas are also able to use exudates that have been pre-cooled from air-conditioned areas adjacent to them to cool.
